In a thousand years from today, the geniuses of the future will have a hard time trying to explain how it was impossible back in 2024 to convince a Communist and a Trumpian that water is wet.
I hate Donald Trump.
My aversion to everything Donald Trump represents is evident to anyone who knows me or glances at my Facebook wall. However, for those unfamiliar with the complexities of Cuban-American dynamics, my disdain for the former president and his ideology might seem puzzling, especially considering my Cuban heritage.
Allow me to clarify for those who find themselves in this perplexing situation, as well as for my fellow Cubans who question why some among us embrace such a divisive figure and his dangerous ideology. As a matter of fact, let's cut to the chase without digging too deep into philosophical analyses; I'll stick to the essentials and elaborate only where necessary.
The Origins of Cuban Trumpian Patriotism.
Before digging into what it means to be a Cuban Trumpian patriot, it's crucial to acknowledge that the subservient and idolatrous attitude of a segment of the Cuban community toward a would-be dictator is not uniquely Cuban. Germans, Russians, Chinese, Italians, Koreans, and many others have rallied behind false prophets promising paradise. Cubans, however, have mastered the game.
The roots of Cuban Trumpian patriotism trace back to 1959. Many who now extol Donald Trump once worshiped Fidel Castro.
While this fact is no secret to those moderately informed about Cuba's revolutionary history, it may come as a revelation to many who were deceived by former Castro revolutionaries turned Trumpian patriots.
Since 1959, thousands of Cubans have followed or feigned allegiance to our own peculiar prophet, Fidel Castro, in life and in death. Under Castro's rule, and to this day, Cubans are raised in an environment where truth, genuine friendship, respect, and other human virtues are rare commodities. In such a corrupt environment, pretense becomes a survival mechanism.
Unfortunately, we humans are not paragons of virtue. For many of us, pretense is not enough; so, some Cubans would rather choose the path of revolutionary submission, with all its moral depravity. It is this Cuban revolutionary, whether genuine or feigned, who serves as the breeding ground for Trumpian patriotism.
The Cuban Trumpian Patriot and Cuba's Future
The moral decline that began in 1959 will cast a shadow over Cuba for generations to come. The future remains uncertain, but the implications are dire. Miami's brand of Trumpian patriotism offers little hope for the island, though. The Cuban Trumpian patriot mirrors the Cuban revolutionary. Fidel Castro would likely be proud to see how far his legacy has spread.
Thankfully, Cuban Trumpian patriotism is a barking dog that doesn't bite, if we learn how to keep it at bay.
